Suyu Su
One of the residents’ name contains the Chinese character Su(茱), which means Suyu, a type of cornelian cherry. And it’s also the name of the neighborhood, Suyu. There’s a connection in the names like this.
1) Basic Info
- Location: Suyu-dong, Seoul
- Population: a 46-year-old photographer Mom, a 44-year-old guitarist dad, a 10-year-old daughter, a 15-year-old dachshund Tokki, marsh snails and marimo
- Language: Korean (because of the elementary school student daughter, the parents should watch their language), English (the parents also should help with the daughter’s English homework)
- History: They had lived freely in Hongdae area until March 11th, 2009. Then they moved to the 2nd floor of the grandparents’ house in Suyu for some reasons. People told them Suyu would be a place of no return once starting to live there. They have been living there so far with no attempts to escape from it, like what the people said.
- Important Memorial Days: They usually forget special days. On birthdays, they have special food or just birthday greetings. Sometimes, each member is allowed to buy a gift for him/herself. Celebrating wedding anniversary was over once the daughter was born on the same day. However, the daughter wants to celebrate all kinds of special days including birthday, Children’s day, Christmas, Thanksgiving (Chuseok), New Year’s Day, Halloween and Valentine’s Day.
- Additional Information: The grandparents are living on the 1st floor and it is completely separated from the 2nd floor. This is how the family can live there without any problem but their friends don’t feel comfortable to come over. The mom and dad have separate studios so guitars and cameras are not in the house.
2) Main Attractions
- Entrance stairway
Entering the house, the first thing you can see is this stairway. The house is old so red-colored wood was used a lot to build it. The family didn’t like it so they decorated with stickers from Daiso. There’s not enough space for shoes so the area is always messy. The stairway is good for working out your legs.
- The Boiler Room
The boiler is placed in that mysterious place as there’s no other place for it. A boiler person always has to go through the window from the living room for check-up. Watching the scene will thrill you, too.
- The Attic
You can store a lot of things here but there’s no way to avoid a lot of mold. This is why it is empty, stirring up your imagination.
- The Yard Alley
The yard space that looks like an alley surrounds the house, but it is blocked by a boiler room at some point so it is not a complete circle. This is also a spot to get some fresh air at night

- The Kitchen Garden and Plants
Thanks to the grandparents’ garden and plants, food self-sufficiency and observing nature are possible.

3) Things to see
- CDs
The mom’s CD collection, which mainly consists of heavy metal. But ever since the MP3 era, it has been existing as a private collection.
- The Bunk Bed
One way to utilize small space. The mom and dad thought the daughter would be excited to have it but she refuses to sleep there. It is impossible to keep it tidy.
4) Things to Enjoy
- Board Games
Various games are available for the kid. You can learn a lot of tricks and knowledge.

Playing with a dog
Tokki (15) is super friendly and she just enjoys being hugged by a stranger. As the daughter grows, her friendship with Tokki grows, too.
- Blowing bubbles
When it’s cold, they play with bubbles in the house and when it’s hot, they play in the yard. Cleaning is not a priority.
- Cooking class
Cooking time with the mom who is not interested in cooking. Therefore, mostly simple meals are made here.
5) Local Food
Combination of home-cooked meals and delivery food. Lately, the dad started to be interested in cooking so he entertains the family with various dishes.
6) Study
The daughter only goes to school once a week. She starts a day with online lectures for the rest of the week. She studies hard but she is still a third grader so everything becomes the mom’s homework in the end.
